"KroK13" (KroK13)

Yes, I've asked the Google, overlord of all. No, it wasn't helpful.
I recall that one driver or other from the days of Group B once said of the spectators, "They are just bushes to us. If they are anything else, we cannot drive."
Have any of you heard this before? Do any of you know who said it? Just curious. And thanks.

What's staggering to me is just how brutal the 80's were. Only two years were fatality-free (1981 and 1984), the Tour de Course had fatalities three years in a row (85-87), and the decade ended with a ridiculous five deaths in three months (and, when you throw in the October '88 accident as well, seven deaths in six months. Interestingly, this six month span made up three of the four times in WRC history when both occupants of the car perished). Also, morbidly, the stats support the long-running joke of "It's always the co-driver's side." Nearly 2/3 of the deaths were co-drivers (12/19), and if you remove the accidents where both sides died it becomes nearly 75% (8/11). Furthering that, no drivers have died since the 80's, but four co-drivers have.
I will also say the list actually paints a brighter picture than is technically true, at least of more recent years. I don't know if this has always been the case, but for at least the past decade there have been national-level rallies held in conjunction with the WRC events (drivers racing the same stages in the same order on the same days with the same organizers, but their entry fee went to the national rally club instead of the WRC). In the past five years I've heard of at least two deaths from those national-level competitors, with the latest (I believe) being Germany 2013.

I can't swear to this, but I believe it was Michele Mouton.
